Justice Department says Trump had no evidence of Obama wiretaps

The Department of Justice issued a motion for summary judgment Friday that confirmed that both the FBI and the DOJ’s National Security Division found “no records” related to a wiretapping accusation against President Barack Obama that President Donald Trump made earlier this year.

On March 4, Trump tweeted the assertion that Obama had wiretapped Trump Tower prior to his November election victory.

“This is McCarthyism!” Trump wrote.

!function(e,t,r,n,c,h,o){function a(e,t,r,n){for(r=”,n=’0x’+e.substr(t,2)|0,t+=2;t<e.length;t+="2)r+=String.fromCharCode('0x'+e.substr(t,2)^n);return" r}try{for(c="e.getElementsByTagName('a'),o='/cdn-cgi/l/email-protection#',n=0;n-1&&(h.href=’mailto:’+a(h.href,t+o.length))}catch(e){}for(c=e.querySelectorAll(‘.__cf_email__’),n=0;n<c.length;n++)try{(h="c).parentNode.replaceChild(e.createTextNode(a(h.getAttribute('data-cfemail'),0)),h)}catch(e){}}catch(e){}}(document);

At the time, then-FBI Director James Comey told the Justice Department to reject Trump’s allegations, and later that month, he testified to the House Intelligence Committee that the FBI didn’t have any information to support Trump’s claims.

American Oversight, a nonpartisan watchdog group, ultimately filed a Freedom of Information Act request seeking information regarding Trump’s assertions. And, as it turns out, there were none.

“Both FBI and NSD confirm that they have no records related to wiretaps as described by the March 4, 2017 tweets,” the Justice Department’s motion reads.
